EU leaders are gathering on Thursday and Friday for a summit in Brussels with Ukraine’s bid to join the bloc at the top of the agenda.
The question at hand: Whether to formally name the country an EU candidate, a critical step in the long, complex road to becoming a full EU member.
Kyiv has seen a few positive signs in recent days that it might get the coveted designation. Last week, three major EU powers — Germany, France and Italy — all endorsed candidate status for Ukraine, albeit with some added conditions. The European Commission also recommended a similar approach.
Also on the table will be whether to grant Moldova and Georgia EU candidate status. Moldova is seen as more likely than Georgia to get the nod, after getting backing from both the Commission and Germany, France and Italy.
