Pope Francis surprised young Ukrainian refugees who were being treated at a paediatric hospital here in Rome on Saturday.
The Vatican released a photo of the pope speaking to a girl who had her head completely bandaged and what looked like a tube in the throat.
Pope Francis visited Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital in Rome to express gratitude for the care provided for Ukrainian children fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The hospital has cared for approximately 50 children from Ukraine since the outbreak of conflict.
The Vatican reported that nineteen children from Ukraine are being treated at the Bambino Gesu hospitals for serious injuries, such as brain damage, cancer or neurological conditions. Since the start of the war, the hospital has seen approximately 50 children from Ukraine.
Francis spoke in a message to a church conference in Slovakia on Friday, saying that the blood and tears of children and the suffering of women who are fleeing from bombings shake our conscience.
