Reuters removes Russian state news agency TASS from its content marketplace
Reuters will remove all the content of the Russian state news agency TASS from its business-to-business service Reuters Connect, it said Wednesday in an internal email to staff.
The well-known news wire service said that “making TASS content available on Reuters Connect is not aligned with the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.”
The move follows growing criticism of how the war in Ukraine was portrayed by the Kremlin-backed news organization. Earlier this week, accounts from multiple Reuters journalists raised alarms over the company’s partnership with the Russian state-controlled media organization, which dates back to 2020. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this partnership and TASS’ ties with the Russian government prompted more scrutiny from Reuters employees.
“Reuters newsroom operates independently of any Reuters Connect marketplace agreements,” the note sent by CFO Matthew Keen further reads.
Since the invasion, Western broadcasters and tech giants have restricted access to Russian state-owned media RT and Sputnik because of concerns of spreading disinformation.
